Spring has sprung on the mid-north coast, and the warming currents pushing into the Wallis Lake system are creating prime fishing conditions. The water temperatures are steadily climbing into the low 20s (Celsius), which is acting as a dinner bell for estuary predators. Weather conditions remain generally stable, though anglers should keep an eye on the afternoon northerly winds that can chop up the expansive lake surface. The Forster/Tuncurry breakwalls are safe and fishable, but always exercise caution on the rocks during larger ground swells. Overall, estuary conditions are excellent, making this a highly recommended window to get on the water.

Primary Target: Dusky Flathead
The undisputed king of the spring estuary warm-up is the Dusky Flathead. As the sun heats the shallow sand flats, these ambush predators are moving out of their winter lethargy and feeding aggressively. You will find them sunning themselves in the shallows during the rising tide and sitting on the deeper drop-offs waiting for baitfish to be flushed out on the ebb.
Sleeper Pick: Luderick (Blackfish)
While many anglers associate Luderick strictly with winter, there are still excellent numbers holding in the system. Most visiting anglers cruise right past them in pursuit of flathead or bream, but those targeting the rocky edges and weed beds with light floats are finding heavy stringers of hard-fighting blackfish.
Baitfish Report
The estuary is currently flush with seasonal forage. Prawns are beginning to run in good numbers, making them the primary protein source for flathead, whiting, and bream. Nippers (bass yabbies) are heavily active on the sandbanks. Match your presentation to these crustaceans for the highest success rate.

Where to Target
Focus your efforts on the lower half of Wallis Lake. For flathead, work the 4-to-10-foot drop-offs along the sand flats near Coomba Park and the Paddocks. If you are chasing bream, the oyster leases south of the Forster-Tuncurry Bridge are holding solid fish, though you will need to extract them quickly before they cut your line on the sharp racks. For a shot at a springtime Mulloway (Jewfish), position yourself along the deeper channels of the breakwall near the entrance during the tide changes.
Lure & Bait Selection
- Lures: 3-inch to 4-inch prawn imitation soft plastics are dominating right now. Rig them on a 1/4oz or 1/8oz jighead depending on the current flow. Surface poppers (like the Bassday Sugapen) are also starting to draw explosive strikes from whiting over the shallow flats.
- Colors: With the water running incredibly clear, stick to natural, translucent profiles. "New Penny," "Bloodworm," and natural prawn colors are outperforming opaque or flashy patterns.
- Bait: Freshly pumped live nippers or live bloodworms are absolute candy for Sand Whiting and Bream. If you are targeting the breakwall for Mulloway, deploy live mullet or large tailor strips on a snelled rig.
Timing
The bite is heavily dictated by tidal movement. The last two hours of the run-out tide and the first hour of the run-in are producing the most aggressive feeding windows. REGIONAL ALTERNATIVE
If the northerly winds pick up and make the main basin of Wallis Lake too choppy to fish comfortably, pack up and head 25 minutes south to Smiths Lake. This smaller, often closed-off system offers excellent protection from the wind. It features pristine weed beds and sandy drop-offs that hold fantastic numbers of flathead and bream. Launch a kayak or small tinny near Frothy Coffee Boatshed and work shallow diving hardbodies or lightly weighted plastics along the weed edges. It is a much more intimate fishery that fishes exceptionally well when the main lake is blown out.
Pro Tip: When fishing the oyster leases in Wallis Lake, upgrade your fluorocarbon leader to at least 12-15lb. The crystal clear water demands stealth, but the razor-sharp shells demand abrasion resistance. It is a delicate balancing act!
