Connecticut offers a diverse range of saltwater fishing opportunities, particularly in Long Island Sound, where various species are abundant throughout the year. The fall season is especially vibrant, with species like striped bass, bluefish, and weakfish being popular targets for anglers.
Weekly Catches
The catches below cover the last 7 days, highlighting the recent fishing activity in Connecticut's saltwater areas.
Striped Bass
Striped bass fishing has been excellent, with fish ranging from 30 to 40 inches being caught in several areas of the western Sound. The cooling temperatures and recent northeast blow have driven these bass to feed actively. Effective baits include live eels and 13-inch Duratech eels. Anglers are also finding striped bass in backwater estuaries across the state, which is typical for October.
Bluefish
Bluefish action has been sporadic but rewarding, with large "gators" being caught at The Race and around Plum Gut. While many bluefish are on the smaller side, the deeper reefs are yielding bigger catches.
Weakfish
Weakfish have been abundant, with catches reported in numbers not seen in decades. Anglers are successfully using soft plastics, particularly in pink, to catch these fish. The weakfish are now found throughout the Sound, not just in the western areas.
False Albacore
False albacore have been scattered following a strong northeast blow, though there were reports of larger schools on the Long Island side of the Sound before the swell. Their presence remains sporadic in Connecticut waters.
Bonito
Bonito are still present, though not in huge numbers. They can be found throughout the Sound, with some bigger bones around Westbrook and Clinton.
Porgy and Sea Bass
Porgy (scup) and sea bass fishing has been excellent, with easy limits of porgies and increasing numbers of keeper sea bass. The Norwalk** area is particularly noted for its strong bottom fishing, yielding jumbo porgies and keeper sea bass.
Weather & Marine Conditions
Recent weather conditions have included a strong northeast blow, which has affected the distribution of some species like false albacore. The cooling temperatures are expected to enhance fishing conditions, especially for species like striped bass and sea bass.
Fishing Conditions & Tips
As the fall run begins, anglers can expect increased activity from species like striped bass, with potential for topwater action and blitzes. The variety of bait in the Sound, including sand eels, bunker, anchovies, silversides, and butterfish, is supporting a vibrant fishing environment.
Regulations & Notices
The fall blackfish season in Connecticut is set to begin on October 10th and run through November 28th. Anglers should be aware of the minimum sizes and possession limits for various species, such as a minimum size of 16 inches for weakfish and 9 inches for bluefish.
