As we approach the final days of the season before the annual October 31st closure, Arvada-Blunn Reservoir is in a transitional state. Current conditions dictate a "CAUTION" rating for anglers planning a trip. The reservoir is experiencing extremely low water levels, which has drastically altered the accessible shoreline and structure.
Safety & Access Advisory: The main fishing dock is currently closed due to damage from the receding water line. While the boat ramp remains functional for now, it is on the verge of closure if levels drop any further. More importantly, a section of the reservoir trail approximately 500 feet west of the boat ramp is strictly closed due to active bear activity. Do not attempt to bypass this closure to reach north-side spots. Weather-wise, typical late October Front Range conditions apply—expect chilly mornings with brisk afternoon winds. No ice has formed yet, making this strictly an open-water game.
SPECIES INTEL
Primary Target: Rainbow Trout
Colorado Parks and Wildlife manages this water heavily for Rainbow Trout, and they remain the most reliable target. With the water drawing down, trout are being pushed out of the shallow flats and are concentrating along the steeper drop-offs and the remaining deep basin near the dam face.
Sleeper Pick: Channel Catfish
While most anglers are throwing spinners for stocker rainbows, Blunn harbors some surprisingly large Channel Catfish—with local reports confirming fish pushing the 20-to-30-pound mark. The low water has concentrated these bottom-dwellers around the remaining submerged structure on the east side.

- Color: Silver/Blue and Gold/Red for the spoons to mimic distressed juvenile perch and minnows. Use green pumpkin or dark brown for the craw jigs.
- Bait: For the sleeper Channel Catfish, standard chicken livers or cut bait fished on a slip-sinker rig right on the bottom is producing best. For passive trout fishing, floating garlic-scented PowerBait (Chartreuse) fished 18 inches off the bottom on a Carolina rig will get picked up by cruising rainbows.
- Timing: The golden hours are paramount. Be at the gates when they open at 7:00 AM. The first two hours of light offer the best trout bite before the sun hits the water and pushes them deeper. The final hour before the 7:00 PM closure is your best window for catfish.
Pro Tip: With the newly exposed shoreline, the mud can be incredibly soft and treacherous. Wear knee-high rubber boots and probe the ground in front of you before committing your weight to the very edge of the water.

If the low water at Blunn Reservoir makes fishing too difficult, or if the boat ramp officially closes before you arrive, Standley Lake in nearby Westminster is your premier backup option.
Standley Lake offers much more acreage, deeper water, and a robust population of Walleye, Wiper, and Trout. Access the lake via the main park entrance off 86th Parkway. If you are targeting Walleye in the fall, fish the main lake points using a 3/8oz jig tipped with a live nightcrawler or a paddle-tail swimbait in a shad pattern. The water levels here are generally more stable, and the shoreline access is expansive, giving you plenty of room to roam without the tight restrictions currently impacting Blunn.
Pro Tip: When fishing Standley in late October, slow your presentation down. The water is cooling rapidly, and fish are looking for easy, high-protein meals rather than chasing fast-moving reaction baits.
